Forty members of the Washington National Press Club visited the New Zealand Embassy and met Ambassador Mike Moore and his wife Yvonne. The event was for the International Correspondents Committee of the United States club. It followed formal affiliation with the New Zealand National Press Club sealed by the recent visit to Washington of secretary-treasurer Bryan Weyburne
The reporters were interested in the modern, exotic nature of the striking embassy and residence, which feature many Maori works of history and art. Ambassador Moore briefed the visiting US reporters on the aftermath of the Christchurch earthquakes. He discussed the relationship between the US and NZ, which continues to improve in matters of trade, military, and security cooperation, he emphasised. He also talked about the upcoming 70th anniversary of the US Marines deployment to NZ during World War 2.. Moore (pictured with Washington National Press Club’s Myron Belkind at podium) told the Washington club members that he was "in the right place at the right time," serving in this “historic period.” Moore also told the reporters about New Zealand's relations with Australia, China, and other Asian and Pacific nations. Among the visiting Washington reporters was National Press Club Lifetime Achievement Award laureate Connie Lawn who observed that the Washington reporters were mainly focused on cultural and historical ties between the two nations. |
